The purple-fringed orchis were a little disappointing this year - and on my birthday, no less. Only three plants in bloom. Still, George, my trusty associate, managed to get some nice pictures of the plants and other things...

Surprising how civilized it felt to stop for lunch at the Ulster County Historical Society's Member's Garden Party - and meet a lot of fascinating, and very friendly people, as well as touring the historic Bevier House for the first time.

Then on to sweat out that glass of wine for a couple of miles uphill to Bonticou Crag...

...only to be rewarded by discovering a lavish stand of Cyp. acaule - out of bloom, by now, of course, but I can't wait until next May to go find them in their full glory.

Who'd have thought a civilized lunch with a glass of wine could be such an invaluable research tool?
